Franklin High in top 30 percent of MA high schools

Out of 342 Massachusetts high schools surveyed, Franklin High was #90 in the state in the newest rankings issued recently by US News and World Report.

This put Franklin High among the top 30 percent of all high schools in the Commonwealth.

Boston Magazine ranked Franklin HS much higher

Interestingly, Boston Magazine ranked Franklin High School much higher than 90th in the state when it issued its own survey of MA public high schools last October.

Boston Magazine judged Franklin High to be in the top 50 public high schools in the Commonwealth! As I noted in my comments last October on the Boston Magazine school survey:

In placing forty-seventh in the survey, Franklin High was ranked on par with or better than such excellent public high schools serving Mansfield, Walpole, Natick and the regional high school serving Norfolk, Wrentham and Plainville (King Philip Regional). Yet, as noted in a post published here a few years ago, Franklin, MA has a much lower property tax burden than most other I-495 communities with such excellent schools.

Why the disparity in the rankings?

The spread between rankings of 47th and 90th is very wide, especially for surveys completed within 6 months of each other! Perhaps the different evaluations of Franklin High School in Franklin, MA is due to a local versus a national focus in the competing surveys.

Boston Magazine looks only at high schools in Massachusetts while the US News and World Report organization purports to evaluate ALL public high schools in the US.

In describing its 2019 high school rankings, US News and World Report revealed that it used an all-new methodology to evaluate an over eightfold increase in the number of high schools surveyed (23,000 schools in 2019, compared to only 2,700 the previous year). That’s a huge leap in coverage coupled with use of previously untested analytic tools, a combination that may very well expose the 2019 results to unintended error and distortion.

Franklin High a Top 50 School

Franklin High School ranked in the top 50 of all public high schools in Greater Boston in a recent survey released by Boston Magazine.

In producing the rankings, Boston Magazine says it looked at many factors, including SAT and MCAS scores, Advanced Placement participation rates, class size, and student-to-teacher ratios. (Schools on or within the I-495 loop were included in the findings. Excluded from the rankings were charter schools and specialized schools.) So prospective home buyers should give a lot of consideration to the Town of Franklin, Massachusetts!

Family Science Night at Franklin High School, Franklin, MA

Family Science Night is an annual event at the Franklin High School in Franklin, MA.

Presented by members of the school’s Science National Honor Society, the event is designed to give elementary and middle school children hands-on exposure to fundamental scientific principles. The goal of the event is to spark kids’ interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education and encourage them to pursue careers in the sciences.

Franklin High School state of the art

Family Science Night is held every year in the beautiful Franklin High School facility.

Opened in 2014, its three levels contain over 82,000 square feet of academic space. The school’s science labs are state of the art. Classrooms sport cutting edge technology. There’s also an 800 seat auditorium, state of the art media center and a 17,000+ square foot gymnasium.

Franklin, MA High School: spurring student success in times of budget cuts

Demonstrating its commitment to innovative and effective education, the Franklin, MA High School is experiencing great success with its Franklin Arts Academy (FAA). The FAA functions as a school within a school. It helps boost the academic achievements of artistically talented Franklin students who might otherwise struggle in a traditional school environment.

The fact that this program has been implemented in the midst of all the pressure being applied to school budgets across Massachusetts is testament to the quality and dedication of educators in the Franklin MA public school system. Just another reason why Franklin’s schools deserve our support.

Talented visual and performing art

The FAA held its first annual Art Festival one evening last week at the High School.

Showcased was an impressive collection of the students’ creativity.

The visual art and live performances at the Festival were enlightening. The evening made a very good statement about the Franklin public school system.

First year of operation

Only high school juniors were allowed to enroll in the inaugural year of the FAA. In future years, the curriculum will to open to seniors, with the sophomore class perhaps to follow.

The FAA is designed to help students prosper academically through their interest in the arts. Students engage in a special curriculum that integrates several academic courses with instruction in the arts disciplines of their choice. Students also take elective courses outside the Academy.
